Mycoplasmosis - a Serious Problem of Poultry Industry

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The disease is caused by a mycoplasma known as Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG).The strains of MG may differ markedly in virulence, that is, in the degree of their disease-producing power. Some strains of MG are mild while others are highly virulent (very harmful). Mycoplasma is similar to bacteria, but lacks a cell wall. Lack of wall makes MG extremely fragile. They are easily killed by disinfectants, heat, and sunlight. They remain alive in the environment, outside the bird, for only up to 3 days. For this reason, MG is fairly easy to eliminate on single-age, allin all-out poultry farms.

Current Situation with Avian Mycoplasmosis Prevention and Control

Efforts in the United States to control Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) began in the 1960’s, primarily as a response to high condemnations from airsacculitis after the initiation of USDA post mortem inspection of poultry. Somewhat later, M. synoviae (MS) and M. meleagridis (MM) were added to the program. Since then, significant progress has been made in controlling Mycoplasma infections in turkey...

Identification of Strain-Specific Sequences That Distinguish a Mycoplasma gallisepticum Vaccine Strain from Field Isolates

Despite attempts to control avian mycoplasmosis through management, vaccination, and surveillance, Mycoplasma gallisepticum continues to cause significant morbidity, mortality, and economic losses in poultry production. Live attenuated vaccines are commonly used in the poultry industry to control avian mycoplasmosis; unfortunately, some vaccines may revert to virulence and vaccine strains are g...
